Privacy Policy

(This is real and all of it)

Your conversations stay on your device.

Herb runs entirely on your device. Your messages, your memories, your personal data - none of it is sent to a server. There is no server. Herb HQ doesn't operate one. We couldn't look at your data if we wanted to, because we never receive it. (We also don't want to)

We don't have an account system.

Herb knows your name because you said it in your first conversation. It's stored on your phone, alongside everything else learned about you. We don't have a database of users. We don't have your email in a CRM. There is no login from our side.

Web search is the one exception.

When you ask Herb to search the web, the search query is sent out to a third-party service called Tavily. Just the search text - not your name, not your conversation, not your data. Tavily processes the search and returns results. This is the only moment anything leaves your device during normal use, and it contains nothing about you.

Knowledge packs come from the internet.

Herb downloads knowledge packs to expand what Herb knows - sourced from public references, built by HerbHQ. These are one-way downloads. Your device pulls the content. No personal data is sent in return. Once downloaded, the knowledge lives on your phone and works offline.

iCloud sync is optional and encrypted.

If you turn on iCloud sync, your Herb data syncs across your Apple devices through Apple's iCloud infrastructure. This means your data does technically pass through Apple's servers. Here's what that actually means: Your data is end-to-end encrypted using a key that only your devices hold. Apple cannot read it. We cannot read it. No one at Herb HQ has access to your iCloud account, your encryption keys, or any mechanism to request them. Apple's Advanced Data Protection, if you've enabled it, adds an additional layer - even Apple's own infrastructure cannot decrypt your data. If you don't enable iCloud sync, nothing ever leaves your phone. If you delete the app without sync enabled, everything goes with it. That's by design.

Apple handles your subscription.

Your payment goes through the App Store. Apple processes it. We receive confirmation that you have an active subscription - not your payment method, not your billing address, not your card number. Apple's standard StoreKit infrastructure. The same system every app on your phone uses.

We don't collect analytics.

No usage tracking. No session logging. No behavioral analytics. No crash reporting unless you explicitly opt in at a later date, and even then, it would contain zero conversation data.

There is no ad network.

No ads. No tracking pixels. No third-party SDKs collecting data in the background. There's nothing on your phone phoning home.

What Herb HQ actually knows about you:

Nothing. We know how many active subscriptions exist because Apple tells us that number. We don't know who those subscribers are, where they live, what they've asked Herb, or what Herb has learned about them. This is not a policy decision we could reverse. The architecture doesn't allow it. There's nothing to collect because there's nowhere to collect it from.

If you want to delete everything:

Delete the app. If iCloud sync is off, that's it - every conversation, every memory, every connection Herb ever made is gone. If sync is on, Herb's data would still remain on your other device, you can delete this as well. There is no "request data deletion" process because we don't have your data to delete.

One more thing. We built Herb to be the best assistant we could make. That meant keeping everything on your device from day one - not as a feature or as a selling point, as the foundation. Your privacy is the architecture, Herb HQ has no interest in your data. We never designed a way to collect it. We never will.

If you have questions about any of this, we'll answer them directly. hi@herb-ai.com

FAQ

Herb is a personal AI assistant that runs entirely on your iPhone. Herb learns who you are over time and keeps everything on your device. No cloud. No servers. No data collection.

Download Herb from the App Store and open it. Herb walks you through everything in a conversation. No forms, no account creation screens. Just a chat.

iPhone 15 Pro and up. Mac support is coming with Herb for macOS.

For most things, no. Herb runs on your device and works offline. You only need a connection for web search, knowledge pack downloads, and checking for updates.

Other AI assistants run on remote servers. Every message you send leaves your device. Herb runs locally on your phone. Nothing leaves. Herb also builds a persistent memory of who you are, what you care about, and how you communicate - all stored on your device.

Herb remembers things you tell it across conversations. Your name, your preferences, your routines, people in your life. This builds over time and makes Herb genuinely more useful the longer you use it.

Yes. Herb receives model updates, new skills, and knowledge packs over time. The goal is for Herb to become the most useful assistant on your phone.

No. Herb is designed with personality and warmth, not simulated emotion. Herb doesn't pretend to feel things.

Yes. When you ask Herb to search, the query is sent to a third-party service called Tavily. Only the search text is sent - nothing personal.

Downloadable content packs that expand what Herb knows - sourced from public references. Once downloaded, they work offline.

Over time, yes. Herb adapts to how you communicate. This is stored locally as part of your memory profile.

Only you. Conversations are stored on your device and never leave it.

Through your Apple ID settings, same as any app subscription. Settings > Apple ID > Subscriptions.

This can happen during intensive tasks. Close other apps to free up memory. Performance varies by device - iPhone 15 Pro and newer are recommended.

Herb is an AI and can make mistakes. If something seems off, ask Herb to try again or rephrase your question.

Check your internet connection. Web search requires an active connection to reach Tavily's search service.

Check the Permissions tab inside Herb. These features require system permissions to be granted.

Try force-quitting and reopening. If the issue persists, restart your device. Contact hi@herb-ai.com if it continues.

About

Herb HQ

We built Herb as a challenge to the current standard of AI. The technology came about too quickly and created a hole it cannot fill fast enough. To keep subscribers, companies need better models. To become profitable, they need to scale infrastructure and charge more. This cycle was locked in from the beginning. A rush to market that set the economics in a direction that can only get worse.

This is still the beginning of the data center problem. A $100 billion facility is being built in Utah that would use more energy than the entire state. A couple in Georgia can't drink their water because Meta built a data center 400 yards from their house. These aren't edge cases. This is what it costs to run an AI model for 200 million people at the same time, and it's scaling up every quarter.

All of this exists because cloud AI needs massive computers in massive buildings to answer your question. Herb doesn't. Herb runs on a phone. No data center. No cooling tower. No community's water supply. The infrastructure is a chip that's already in your pocket.

An AI assistant for normal people should have always worked this way. One model that knows one person, running on hardware that person already owns. No servers to scale. No water to consume. No data to sell. The only reason it didn't happen sooner is because no one else prioritized the architecture for it.

Water

Cloud AI consumes billions of gallons of fresh water every year just for cooling. Herb uses none. A portion of every subscription supports organizations doing real work to hold the industry accountable. The Piedmont Environmental Council in Virginia, where two-thirds of the world's internet traffic passes through. And Food & Water Watch, the first national organization to call for a moratorium on new data center construction.

One more thing

Herb doesn't generate images, videos, or music. We left those out on purpose. Herb helps you make things and doesn't make things for you. Your job is the creative work. We think you're better at it.
